Cranes 101: Crane Hoist Types

Today’s topic is the choices you have for the material your lifting hoist is made of.

Wire Rope Hoists
Made with a strong core and surrounded by combined wire strands, wire rope hoists are an excellent alternative and EMH’s preferred material. EMH’s wire rope hoists fit and wrap into the grooves of the crane hoist drum. Wire rope hoists are measured by the diameter of a circle that would enclose the wire rope strands, i.e. 5/16″, 3/8″, etc. Each wire rope hoist size is available in various rope constructions and materials.  EMH manufactures its own single and double girder wire crane hoists for standard industrial applications, with capacities up to 50 tons.

EMH also manufactures engineered crane hoists

Welded Link Load Chain Crane Hoists
Welded link load chain hoists are a series of interwoven formed and welded links that fit pockets of the hoist load sprocket that transmits motion to the load chain.  Problematic is that these crane hoists are not interchangeable between different manufacturers’ hoists.

Roller Load Chain Crane Hoists
Roller load chain hoists are made of a series of alternately assembled roller links and pin links where the pins articulate inside bushings and the rollers are free to turn on the bushings. The links fit teeth of the hoist load sprocket that transmits motion to the load chain. Hoist roller load chain is not interchangeable with power transmission roller chain. Only roller load chain with specifications as originally stated by the hoist manufacturer should be used on any roller load chain hoist.
